Stepping out of the classroom into the bright lights of the working world can induce stage fright in anyone. But for some young people, crossing that threshold can feel impossible.

This year marked the sixth year of Take the Lead, our flagship employability programme for years 11–13, in partnership with RBC. Take the Lead focuses on immersive skills training for young people within five core theatre skills – communication, self-management, self-belief, teamwork and problem solving. Participants on the programme also explore concepts such as body language, self-esteem and imposter syndrome, and learn calming breathing techniques.

By learning these key skills, students improve their confidence in workplace scenarios, such as interviews and team meetings, and their own well-being as well. We spoke to some recent participants about how Take the Lead has helped them with their wellbeing.

The course helps you to focus on the positive elements of your personality and your skills and this also helps with your confidence. It also makes me have more empathy for others who are presenting or leading a project, either in class or in teaching or presenting.
Even though I was a bit nervous at first, it was great to meet with my peers from different schools and to help build my confidence in a lot of life skills.
Everyone was so welcoming and nice and encouraged us so much.
I had to step out of my comfort zone because I don't normally do Drama and it made me really think about how I communicate...which is really helpful.

None of this would be possible without the continued support of our Principal Partner, RBC, and our funders CVC Foundation, Allan & Nesta Ferguson Charitable Settlement, John Lyon’s Charity, The HW Sanderson Art in Industry Fund and Sandra Charitable Trust.
