Introduction

Welcome to our Introduction to Design workshop, written by designer Helen Coyston. Over the course of this workshop, you will explore the creative process of a designer and have the opportunity to create your own costume and set design.

This workshop is broken down into sections so you can complete it in your own time and at your own pace. If you get stuck and need any assistance you can contact us at education@oldvictheatre.com.

Before we begin, you will need a few resources to take part in this workshop. The most important things are a pen or pencil and a notebook to write down your ideas. You will also need:

  • Two pieces of cardboard taped together to create a corner
  • Scissors, tape, glue
  • Old magazines or newspapers
  • Tin foil, scrap paper, colouring pens, etc.

Don’t worry if you don’t have all these things. The minimum you’ll need is a pen or a pencil and a notebook to take part. Remember, this workshop isn’t about getting things right – it’s about your artistic ideas. Good luck, and have fun.

Task

Take a look at the images below of past Old Vic productions. Ask yourself:

  • What stands out to you about the design of each performance?
  • What do you think the story might be about, purely based on the design elements?
  • What is the tone of the piece?
